Southeast ASIA steel construction seminar 2009 at Sofitel Plaza Saigon hotel, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam

The Southeast Asia Steel Construction Seminar 2009 was co-organized by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF), Japanese Society of Steel Construction (JSSC) and Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport (UT-HCMC) at Sofitel Plaza Saigon Hotel on January 26th, 2010.

Attending the seminar are representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, Departments of Transport, and Universities and Colleges in Ho Chi Minh, and UT-HCMC’s Board of Rectors, and Lecturers and students of related faculties.

Prof. Dr. Tran Canh Vinh highlighted in his speech that this seminar is expected to be an excellent opportunity for participants to acquire useful professional knowledge, which contributes to applying the results of research works with the aim to improving the teaching quality of the university.

As a distinguished guest, Mr. Nguyen Dac Thang, Southern Office Manager, the Ministry of Transport showed his interest in the seminar’s theme which is mainly on infrastructures, traffic works, bridges, ports and harbors, etc. Mr. Thang cheerfully showed the hope that the Vietnam - Japan relations will be considerably strengthened through seminars as such.

Mr. Tetsuya AKAHOSHI, General Manager, Project Development Division, Nippon Steel Corporation expressed his sincere thanks to the participants. He made a brief introduction about the seminar and gave extra information about the new session on Corrosion and Anti- Corrosion in Steel Structures.

The seminar consists of 4 main parts: ports and harbors session, anti-corrosion session focusing on steel structures in ports and harbors, bridge session and techinal session on steel structures.

The presentations which have drawed a lot of attention from the participants are Current Topics of Steel Structures in Tokyo Bay Area by Prof. Osamu KIYOMIYA, Waseda University; Reality of Steel Industry and Tendency of  Using Steel Strutures in Hydrotechnical and Offshore Projects in Vietnam by MSc. Nguyen Huu Huy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport ; and Applications of Steel Sheet Piles and Steel Pipe Piles to Construction Work in Japan by Mr. Masabonu OKAMOTO, Manager of the Construction Technology Department of Sumimoto Metal Industries, Ltd.

After a number of interesting presentations and intense discussions, the seminar finished with great success on the same day’s afternoon. It is believed that this seminar will help to enable more joint academic programs, science works and seminars to be co-organized by both Japanese and Vietnamese organization, associations and institutions.
